How to make a bow

Just a little blog on how to make a bow. Our designer Jodi was making this bow out of red velvet. This makes a nice bow for garlands, plants, mailboxes. This is a tradition florist bow. Can't make one? Just visit you local florist.

First Jodi made a loop. The velvet ribbon has a fuzzy side and a shiny side. You want the fuzzy side to show. Pinch the end of the ribbon and make loop as you make loop pinch ribbon and twist so velvet is facing up. keeping thumb in loop

Make another loop and to the desired size.

. Now pinch and twist keeping ribbon under your thumb and stacked. Don't push it in from the side be sure the ribbon is stacked directly under the loop. Always keeping bow in same hand.

Now make another loop on the other side. Making sure these two loops are the same size. Now pinch and twist.... again keeping all the gathering and twisting stacked directly under thumb. Keep making loops like this for as many loops as you want. You can make the loops alittle larger each time or keep them all the same just keep each alternate loop the same

When Jodi got her desired loops she cut a piece for the streamers and placed at the bottom.

She then took a taped wire and place it through her loop. You can also use pipe cleaner. Again be sure all your loops are stacked don't let them slip out of place.

Then twist the wire to secure. Fluff!

October was our busiest wedding month this year. I will share more weddings as I get pictures. It was so much fun and each and every bride was a joy to work with.

Amy Forman with Payapa Wedding Planning did an awesome job bringing this event together. She is always a pleasure to work with. Christie Meresse was the photographer and that is how I am able to share these beautiful pictures.

The Brides Colors where shades of purple. Her flower Choices were hydrangea, roses, tulips & calla lillies.

The setting was Goodwood Museum and Garden.

Peonies have been a popular cut flower since ancient times. The peony is named after Paeon (also spelled Paean), a student of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine and healing. The peonies use date back to over 2000 years.

Peony seeds have been swallowed whole to prevent bad dreams or used in a poultice to relieve stomach aches. Flower petals have been dried and used to make a tea that was reputed to soothe a cough. They were considered a remedy for all disease or ills. In the middle ages there where not many ailments that peonies were not thought to soothe!

Today they are grown in gardens everywhere though they can not handle our southern climate. They are imported world wide as a beautiful cut flowers. Their elegance and charm are unmatched by any other flower.

Peonies are a favored flower for weddings.

How to make a letter in flowers, Tallahasee Florist

Recently I was asked to do an H for a wedding covered with flowers. Then about three weeks after the wedding I was ask to do the letter A.... The Alabama A for a funeral. So this is how we did it.

1) First find the letter you want and enlarge to desired size. Trace it and cut the pattern in cardboard.
2) Using a sculpting sheet cut out your letter by laying cardboard on styrofoam (sculpting sheets are 24X24 sheet of styrofoam and wet foam)
3) If you have to use more than one sheet pin together with dixon pins and wood pics.
4) Now soak your foam with water. The water will make this heavy so be sure you are using a wood easel or wire it to a strong structure.
5) Now cover with desired flowers. We also wrapped the styrofoam with satin ribbon to cover and give it the finished look from the side.

This H was hung from a beautiful iron gate. This made a perfect touch for the back drop for the nuptials . It took two of us to lift it up. We placed strong wire like a hair pin through the foam and wired it up. Be sure to take ladders.... Wedding folding chairs will fold up on you.

This is our letter A cut out from the sculpting sheet. The line you see are where we had to piece it together. We used dixon pins and wood pic to secure it.

Here is the finished product. The picture does not do it justice. We also did a ribbon that said "roll tide". Wire easels will not hold this piece it needs a wood easel. The curves also make it very fragile.

What a beautiful day and a beautiful bride. Jessica and Josh were married on the Saturday before Easter. It was a perfect day for a outside wedding with blue sky's. The setting was Pebble Hill Plantation , if you have never visited it is worth the ride. The ceremony took place on the tennis court, surround by old brick walls covering in trailing vegetation. We placed a H covered with flowers on the wrought iron gate as the vocal point. Jessica carried a hand held cluster of peonies.
The reception followed at the stables under majestic oak trees. The tables were covered in white linens with lanterns and several small vases of blue hydrangeas on each one.
Our wishes go out to Jessica and Josh for a wonderful future together. Many blessings to you both.

These beautiful blooms are popular for there large, showy heads, comprising of dense clusters of small petal-like sepals. Hydrangeas are available in whites, pinks, lilacs, blues, and greens. They are available all year-round as cut flowers. Peak season is from March to October. Cut hydrangeas are heavy drinkers and require lots of water. So check the level of you water daily and re-cut the stems every other day. Frequent misting is also beneficial for the flowers at room temperature. If they do wilt, no worry just put the seems in almost boiling water for about 30 seconds and place back in water and watch them as they come back to life. Vase life for the hydrangea is 7 to 10 days.

Will the Real Florist Please Stand Up

I saw the word “real” and it made me start to think. Being a floral designer now for over 30 years I have seen lots of changes in today florist industry. I remember when almost every women wore an orchid corsage to church on Easter Sunday and it only came from the local Florist. No grocery store chain and there was no Walmart. Poinsettias, Easter lilies were only found at your local florist. …. The only place to find fresh flowers was from your local florist and maybe a few on the side of the road vendors. Okay that was a very long time ago and times have changed

Now if you want to find flowers, let’s say in Tallahassee, you just type” florist Tallahassee” in the google search. Or is it that simple? Try it and see for yourself. "florist Tallahasse"

Will the” real” florist please stand up!!!

I even typed my shops name in google search and a place called gifts.com was using A Country Rose as their google search heading. YIKS!!! Businesses like 800flowers, Proflowers, Pinklotusflowers, Flowers Today and the list goes on, are listed in all the top sponsored searches. What I say is buyer beware. These businesses are what I like to call order gatherers and they charge an extra fee to your order so that a $40.00 arrangement will cost you $50 or more…..

Located at the top and side of all the major search engines are paid advertising spaces. Usually there are 2-3 on the top and 3 or 4 down the side. These for the most part are paid per click and they are usually highlighted. Just below this on google , you start seeing the google map and organic searches. These are the ones you want to click on to find a “real” local florist. Once on the website be sure to look for local addresses to make sure the site you are on is actually in the city you are searching.

If you still use the yellow pages to look for local businesses……again ask will the “real” florist please stand up. There are also shops who gather orders who will place a large display add or listing in your local phone book……just look for local addresses on the ads. If there are no addresses then it is good possiblity they are not a "real" local shop.

Just remember when in doubt just call them and ask are you a "real" local florist?

History of St. Patrick’s Day
St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated because of religious figure named St. Patrick passed away on March 17th 460 A.D. At age 16, St. Patrick was a prisoner of Irish raiders who were attacking his family’s estate. Although his family was not considered religious, he turned to his faith to help him through his imprisonment and became a devout Christian. According to his writing, St. Patrick, was spoken to by God to escape. He did escape and fled to Britain, where another vision told him to return to Ireland and start converting the Irish to Christianity.
In his attempt to convert the Irish he incorporated traditional rituals into his lessons. Patrick used bonfires during Easter and superimposed a sun on the Christian cross, now called the Celtic cross, so it would seem more natural to the Irish people.
In the 17th century, the English began to seize Irish land and prohibit the use of their language and Catholicism. This is when the Irish started wearing shamrocks as a symbol of their pride and dislike of the English. Shamrocks were a sacred plant in ancient Ireland and symbolized the rebirth of spring.
Many people Irish or not, celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, a religious feast day and anniversary of St. Patrick’s death. One of the main courses many Americans partake in is corned beef and cabbage. Corned beef is not food item found in the Irish diet, but Irish immigrants in New York began substituting it for bacon because of its low cost.
Leprechauns were not generally associated with St. Patrick’s Day until Walt Disney released a film called Darby O’Gill and the Little People in 1959 which featured a little leprechaun. Leprechauns have quickly evolved into a universal symbol for St. Patrick’s Day.

A recent behavioral study conducted at Rutgers University shows that men who receive flowers demonstrate increased social interaction and happiness. This research expands on previous data collected, which showed that flowers enhance happiness and social connections among women.
Conducted by Rutgers University student researcher Holly Hale and psychology professor Jeannette Haviland-Jones, Ph.D., the study involved two groups of men who varied in age and ethnicity, one group who received a surprise gift of flowers and a control group who did not. The subjects' verbal cues and body language (measures of social interaction) were studied.

The men who received flowers demonstrated increased eye contact in conversation, stood in closer proximity to the researchers, and produced more and truer smiles than those men who did not receive flowers.

While in general, women displayed a greater level of emotion in their study, the effects are equal. "When it comes to receiving flowers, men and women are on the same playing field," said Haviland-Jones. "It seems that we all express extraordinary delight and increase our social behavior."
